The “disjointed” geometry of the urban fabric surrounding the Convento da Estrela, the non-orthogonal orientation of the convent and the Basilica relative to any part of that fabric, the misalignment between the Basilica’s axis and that of the Jardim da Estrela, and the topography of the area all contribute to making this part of the city particularly vibrant.
In an urban fabric awaiting completion, we have the opportunity to explore different solutions by taking advantage of a unique urban development project.
With the aim of treating the site as a unified space, the proposal adopts a free-form design that is independent of the geometric grid of the streets and the alignment of the building facade to pre-established lines. It flows seamlessly with the compact volume of the convent and visually opens up the public space toward the avenue, restoring the convent building to its rightful prominence.
The decision to opt for a single, unified structure minimizes the impact on the site compared to potential dispersed solutions consisting of multiple blocks, and also simplifies vehicle access by providing a single mixed-use roadway.
The proposal aims to restore the convent building to its former prominence by creating a new setting and defining the southern edge of the block, while opening up new public spaces with distinct character associated with each use
