The purpose of the renovation was to reorganize the interior layout of the Basilica da Estrela—considered the last example of Baroque architecture in Portugal—and to designate it as a National Monument, in a manner appropriate to the current liturgical celebrations.

With a contemporary design and the use of steel and laminated wood in the altar, the ambo, the base of the processional cross, and the pedestal for the new presbytery, these elements distinguish the existing space from the new design without creating any visual disruption.
